How Cement Mixers Work

The concrete as a building material has been used for a very long time now, while the concrete mixer is a machine invented in the 20th century. Today, the concrete mixers are a combination of old and new technology and the results are fascinating. The cement mixer is essential machine for building buildings, foundations and other solid structures where concrete is needed. There are many different types of cement mixers, from small portable cement mixers to large truck cement mixers. Each model comes in many different sizes, shapes and configurations, designed for different applications and tasks. But generally they all have the same purpose – to form a concrete by mixing cement, sand or gravel and water.

One common type of a cement mixer heavily used today is the portable cement mixer. It consists of rotating drum and a set of blades with angles to the axis, located at the center of the rotating drum. Portable cement mixers also consist of a motor that runs the machine. The process of concrete making is quite simple, but if the right ratio of the concrete ingredients is not determined, the end result will be lower quality concrete. When using a portable cement mixer there are several steps for creating a strong and high quality concrete.

1st step: Add the right amount of cement into the portable cement mixer (usually about 3 full shovels). Also, add the right amount of sand or gravel, which is about 6 full shovels, but it depends on the application and type of work.

2nd step: Pour water into the portable cement mixer, which is usually about 3.8l. Before you start making concrete, double check the amount of water which is needed for a perfect mixing, because if there is too much water, the concrete will be weak, thin, unmanageable and it will not dry as supposed.

3rd step: When all ingredients are inside the drum, turn on the portable cement mixer to begin mixing the ingredients into the rotating drum. The portable cement mixers are usually powered by a generator or petrol or diesel engines. Allow the portable cement mixer to mix the ingredients until you get a smooth mixture without having the cement mix dust sticking on the inside of the drum. As long as the drum is rotating, the mixture will not begin to dry.

4th step: Once the concrete is mixed well, the next step is to turn off the portable cement mixer. It is recommended to turn off the mixer before your pour the mixture into a wheelbarrow and transport it to desired location. Assuming that you are using a light-weight portable cement mixer, you can move it to the desired location by pulling it. However, using a wheelbarrow is more appropriate and easier.

5th step: With a standard shovel, remove all the concrete from the wheelbarrow and pour it on the desired place. If you need more concrete, just repeat the steps until you get enough concrete to complete the task.
