Distribution Boards Explained

Also known as breaker panel or panelboard, a distribution board is an element of an electric supply system, which separates an electrical power feed into secondary circuits, while providing a protective fuse for each circuit in a regular inclosure.

A distribution board is an equipment consisted of bus bars and possible fuse links, switches and automatic protective components. It is used for connecting, controlling and protecting a variety of branch circuits fed from one principal circuit in a building or premises for safe and simple management of incoming power supply. It also has a function to protect the electrical distribution system preventing it from getting damaged due to overload, short circuit, earth leakage, etc.

This equipment features a distribution system (which conveys electrical energy from bulk power source) that is usually divided into two systems: high voltage (primary distribution) and low voltage (secondary distribution). This system can be classified in numerous ways like for example, according to current A.C. or D.C. distribution, or according to the number of wire (two wire, three wire, four wire, etc.) or according to the character of service (general light and power, industrial power, railway, street lights, etc.). Today, the AC distribution system is the most common distribution system used in the industry.

A distribution board is a sheet metal fabricated enclosure that can be open, semi-closed or totally enclosed; designed to provide and control electric power to distribution systems. The parameters such as current frequency per unit and voltage, are marked on the board. Power supply can be regulated through MCB’s and switches, while fault protection through the use of different relays.
