Comforting Stuffed Animals: Buying Guide

Remember Winnie the Pooh’s Piglet? This timid yet lovable character always clings to his best friend Winnie the Pooh for reassurance, much like a baby to their favourite comforter. Pooh’s calm and reassuring presence helps Piglet feel safe, especially when he’s anxious or scared, in the same way as stuffed animal toys provide little ones with a sense of security and help with soothing.

Most mental health professionals would agree that feeling connected, as though we belong and matter to others, is key to our mental health. Plush toys somehow meet these key needs when adults or caregivers can’t or won’t. If your little one seems to have separation anxiety when you’re not nearby, has trouble getting to sleep, or feels unsettled during doctor visits or while adjusting to daycare, stuffed animal toys can provide comfort and reassurance. However, not every stuffed animal is the right fit for cuddles.

Safety First

It’s natural to feel inclined to buy a toy just because you think it’s cute, but before you do so remember that safety should always come first. You can start by choosing the right toys according to age; introduce a stuffed animal to your baby around three to six months old. For babies and toddlers, it is best to choose a medium-sized toy, one they can handle with ease. For older children, you can choose a larger, more complex stuffed toy they could take everywhere.

Begin by placing the toy in their crib or on their changing table during playtime, allowing them to explore it under your supervision. As your little one grows, the furry friend can become a source of comfort during naps, bedtime and even when they’re feeling a bit unsettled. The familiar softness and scent of the toy can offer reassurance and help them feel secure.

Most experts recommend waiting until your baby is at least 12 months old before allowing a stuffed animal to stay in the crib overnight. Before this age, it’s best to avoid any items in the crib that could pose a suffocation or choking risk. When your baby reaches 12 months, the risks of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) significantly decrease. However, it’s important to ensure the stuffed animal is small, lightweight, and free of loose parts like ribbons, bows, plastic eyes or buttons, as these can be dangerous if they become detached.

Soft and Cuddly

The next step is to find one that feels cuddly, soft, and smooth. One of the best fabrics that meet these criteria is merino wool. Know for its softness and breathability, merino is gentle against your little one’s sensitive skin. Organic cotton is another popular choice. This fabric is gentle, soft and free from harmful chemicals, making it perfect for babies with delicate skin. It’s also breathable and absorbent, ensuring comfort during playtime or naps. Velour stuffed animal toys are also common. This plush fabric has a smooth texture and provides a soft, cozy feel that children love to snuggle up with.

Durable

Choose a cuddly companion that can be easily washed and cleaned. Kids are notorious for getting their toys dirty, whether from spills, drool or playtime messes. A machine-washable stuffed animal is the perfect choice because it can be tossed in the laundry whenever it gets dirty. This way your child’s favourite cuddly companion stays fresh and clean without the hassle of hand-washing. Also, look for toys with reinforced stitching at seams and around buttons or other small parts that can hold up through frequent washing.

Hypoallergenic

Next, keep in mind that the furry friend will often be close to their face. That’s why it’s important to buy plushies made from hypoallergenic and non-toxic materials. Look for stuffed animals made from certified safe fabrics, especially if your baby tends to put things in their mouth. These haven’t been treated with harsh chemicals and toxic dyes that can often cause skin irritation, allergies, or respiratory issues.

Familiar

You can consider getting a plush toy with your little one’s favourite character. Are they into Disney? Maybe they’d love a cuddly Moana, Mickey or Simba to snuggle with. These familiar characters can provide extra reassurance, making bedtime, car rides or new experiences feel safer and more comforting.

Have a Backup

If the stuffed animal is a must-have, consider getting a duplicate in case it gets misplaced. Imagine it’s bedtime and your child’s animal toy is nowhere to be found. Kids get upset when their favourite comforter appears to be gone forever, so it’s always a good idea to have a replica.

Keep in mind, though, that even if it looks identical, your child might not accept it. Kids are very observant, especially when it comes to something as important as their comforter. Also, be sure to keep it in the same condition. Your child will know if suddenly their cuddly companion smells different and looks cleaner.
